Why buy it when you can make it from scratch at home?! Today we made homemade chocolate syrup perfect for your chocolate milk or ice cream.Chocolate milk is the perfect way to satiate a sweets craving.  Up until recently, we’ve had the quintessential brown squeeze-bottle in the fridge next to the milk.  Then my son asked, “Can’t we make homemade chocolate syrup?”  It caught me off guard at first because I was so used to just buying the chocolate syrup, but then I thought about it.  There is absolutely no reason we can’t make our own chocolate sauce.  Even better, with the homemade chocolate sauce, we can control the quality of the ingredients and will know exactly what is in our sauce.

Homemade Chocolate Syrup

2 cups water
2 cups sugar
½ tsp kosher salt
1 cup cocoa powder
2 Tbsp vanilla

Combine the water, sugar, and salt in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, and hold it at a boil for 1 minutes. Drop the heat, and whisk in the cocoa powder. When the chocolate sauce is at a simmer, and the cocoa powder is fully combined, remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the vanilla. Allow your chocolate sauce to cool before storing in a canning jar or other airtight container placed in the fridge for up to 2 months.

This is so much better than that corn-syrup crap from the store! A great idea.

My mom makes something similar for making homemade hot chocolate using hot cocoa instead of using the instant. Tastes so good! 🙂
