After making this pudding, I will NEVER go back to the little box!  Our Homemade Chocolate Pudding Mix is richer, creamier, and has a truer chocolate flavor than anything I've ever made from a mix.  The bonus - it costs less to make a big batch than it does to buy 4 of the little boxes (2 nights of dessert).

Our family has one hell of a sweet tooth!  We like our desserts.  We especially like our chocolate desserts, so our first switch out is a bit of a no-brainer.  Instead of buying the boxes of chocolate pudding mix, we will now be making our own homemade chocolate pudding mix.

Homemade Chocolate Pudding Mix

3 1/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
6 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 2/3 cups cornstarch
1 tsp kosher salt

In a large mixing bowl, combine the unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, cornstarch, and salt.  Just use your whisk to mix everything together.

That’s it!  Store your pudding mix in an airtight container in a dark place (like your pantry) for up to 4 months.  You can also store your pudding mix in 1 cup portions in ziplock bags or small canning jars so that it is pre-portioned and ready to go.  Don’t forget to label your containers so you don’t mistake them for hot chocolate mix!

In a heavy bottom pot, combine your pudding mix and the milk.  Stir over medium heat until the mixture thickens.

Remove from the heat, and stir in the softened butter.  Keep stirring until it disappears into your pudding.

Ok I’m really interested in making this but I’m wondering how many batches of pudding the mix makes. Also, any idea how many servings one batch of the pudding makes?

If you follow the recipe as posted, you will make about 12 cups of the chocolate pudding mix (12 batches of prepared pudding). The prepared pudding, using 1 cup of the mix, makes 6 servings (or 3-4 if you like bigger portions). For our family (5 people), we make a double batch and get dessert one night for all of us, and then 2 extra servings for my husband’s lunches.

Awesome, thanks! I was thinking that’s a lot of sugar, but I feel better knowing it’s actually quite a few servings it gets divided into! My son and I have pretty huge sweet tooths, but I’m trying to be better.

I edited the recipes to indicate how much it all makes. Thanks for pointing out that that info was missing.

And yes it sounds like a lot of sugar in the big batch of mix, but when you realize that works out to 72 servings overall (12 batches of prepared pudding at 6 servings per batch), it’s not so bad. I hope you all enjoy it!
