Day 31: Clothing

The top 4 reasons we have too much clothing (and I’m guilty of most of these):

1. You’ve changed sizes over the years
2. You have maternity, postpartum, and pre-baby clothes
3. You buy for multiple sizes for our children
4. You love clothes, and love to shop

Whatever your reason, from time to time you need to clear out the clothes.  There are a lot of great ways to get rid of clothing, and in some cases you can even make a few dollars in the process.  

For clothes that are out of style or have a small flaw – donate!

There are many charities in your area that take clothing donations.  Personally, I donate to the clothing drives that our Girl Scout service unit hosts a few times a year as a fundraiser, to Salvation Army, or Purple Heart.  Ask around in your community to see where people donate clothing.  Clothing donations are also tax deductible, so always get a receipt for what you have donated and discuss the deductions with your tax professional.

Clothes that are in style, and great condition – sell!

Since I usually only have a few items that fit this category I sell my clothes on the various Facebook resale groups for my area or on eBay.  I have found that eBay is really good for higher priced items and shoes, but the local resale groups are the way to go for in season clothing.  

If you have a lot of brand names, you may want to consider going to a consignment shop like Plato’s Closet.  Consignment shops are more particular about what they will take, so you may need to have a plan B if there is an item you are hoping to sell that the shop isn’t interested in.

For children’s clothes – consign!

Consignment is a great way to purchase children’s clothing at steep discounts.  Its also a great way for you to clear out the clutter and make some money by consigning the clothes that no longer fit your children.  I have been shopping children’s consignment events for the last 9 years, and have always been thrilled with the items I have found for my children, and even more thrilled by the check that I receive when my items sell.  

I purge our closets and clothing several times a year, and the children’s closets are definitely in need of a clean out now, as is my “wardrobe” if you can call it that (I’m fashion challenged).  I’m hoping to spend some time today, and more time this weekend while my children are away doing a clean out.  Its perfect for our 40 Bags in 40 Days Combat Clutter Challenge, but its also perfect timing with the change of seasons and spring cleaning that needs to take place.
