Thank you to Beautiful Feet Books for sponsoring this post, and providing me with a copy of the new Music Appreciation: A Family Study for review.
Beautiful Feet Books has designed a new Music Appreciation curriculum that is a family study, saving you time and money while teaching music.
Music Appreciation Study for the Whole Family
Like many homeschool families, I’m always looking for ways to work smarter, not harder. That means I appreciate curriculum and unit studies that I can use with all of my children. Unfortunately, there isn’t much out there that appeals to elementary and high school-aged students. This is exactly why I love the new music appreciation curriculum from Beautiful Feet Books. It’s unique and such a valuable resource.
While Beautiful Feet Books (BFB) curriculum have always been written for multiple age groups, this is their first every-family study (ideal for 2nd-12th grade). Their hope is this will allow families to spend more time together and foster a love of learning, in addition to saving time when multiple children are utilizing the program in the family.
BFBs brand new Music Appreciation: A Family Study features the Book of Composers by Rebecca Manor, a teacher guide, and a downloadable resource packet. This curriculum provides 54-lessons that you can use for two full years of music education for your children.
Exploring the Book of Composers
From the moment I opened Book of Composers, I was struck by its vibrant illustrations, photographs, and accessible layout. Manor takes us on a journey through the lives and works of some of history’s greatest composers. She presents each with a delightful mix of narrative and factual information.
While studying music appreciation, we were delighted to see that the timeline started with ancient music, moved forward to classical music, and then progressed to the twentieth century. Students will study familiar names like Chopin and Mozart, but also the likes of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, and even Rodgers & Hammerstein and Lin Manuel Miranda. This musical theater nerd was so happy about that section of our studies.
Each composer’s story paints a picture for the students making it easy for them to connect with their lives and music. Manor skillfully weaves together anecdotes, musical insights, and historical context, creating a rich tapestry that brings the music to life.
Our favorite feature is the QR codes throughout the book. These allow us to take pause and experience the music that we are learning about. My children have saved several of their favorites and now listen to them while working on their other lessons.
