Day 2: Declutter Your Medicine Cabinet
If you are like me, things go into the medicine cabinet and then I forget about them. Whether its a nail polish that I shoved in there, or a shampoo sample I got the last time I went to the salon, it all goes into the medicine cabinet. That is why your assignment for Day 2 (Thursday) is to declutter you medicine cabinet.
Set your timer for 10 minutes, get your trash can ready … and GO!
Take everything out of the cabinet. Quickly wipe down the shelves with your favorite cleaner. Now as you put everything back into your medicine cabinet, you are going to do 3 things.
- Ask yourself, “Do I need this?” If it is something that you or a family member does not use, get rid of it. Unopened products and samples can be donated to food banks or homeless shelters. Opened products need to be disposed of properly.
- Ask yourself, “Does it belong in here?” If the answer is no, put it in a separate pile and put it away where it actually belongs.
- Check the expiration date. Do not keep medications that are past their prime.
When the timer goes off, or everything is put away, you are done! More than 1 bathroom, no problem, set another timer and get started, or have a different family member tackle that room for you.
A Note About Disposing of Medication
Please do not flush medications or wash them down the sink. Many police stations, doctors offices, and even fire halls have medication drop off centers where you can drop off your unused medications, including prescriptions, into a locked box, and they will be disposed of properly so they don’t end up in the water supply, the landfill, or in the hands of someone who will abuse them.
