Day 3: Declutter Your Make-Up, Skin & Hair Care
Tomorrow’s challenge of decluttering your make-up, skin & hair care products, goes right along with today’s Medicine Cabinet clean out. Too often, we end up collecting a wide variety of items items that we end up not using for a variety of reasons, yet they still on our counter tops, in our showers, or in our cosmetic bags.
I do not wear make-up on a regular basis, so I know that my cosmetic case is in dire need of a clean out. I’m not sure how old some of the items are that are in there, but lets just say I haven’t bought any lipsticks since my daughter was a baby, and she will be 7 in a few months! Its time for them to go!
If there is a color you love, but you know your item is well past its prime, write down the brand and color, and purchase a new one, and toss the old one. Old cosmetics are a breeding ground for bacteria, and you don’t want to be spreading that on your face.
With regards to skin and hair care, if it is a product that you used once and don’t like the result there is no use keeping it. I have a friend who kept a lotion that she loved the smell of, however she couldn’t use it because she had super sensitive skin and it would make her break out. You know what – buy a candle in that scent, and toss the product! There is no point in keeping something you won’t use.
While you are at it, if the product is empty, get rid of the container! My kids are notorious for using the last of the body wash or shampoo, but they leave the bottle in the shower. No! Rinse it out, recycle the bottle, and move on. If its in a squeeze tube, and you can’t get anymore of the product out of the tube, its time to let it go too!
For every thing else, check your “use by dates” and toss anything that should have been used more than 6mos ago. If you have unopened products, add them to your donate bin for the shelter or food pantry. Even unopened cosmetics can be donated, as well as soaps, shampoo, razors, toothpaste, styling products, lotions, sunscreen, etc. And don’t worry about only having sample/travel sized products – those little soaps you got at the hotel on your last business trip can be donated too!
I love this challenge! I just cleaned up my vanity a couple weeks ago. Threw out quite a few make up items! I’m going to be following along for the rest of the challenges.
