My children have a sudden interest in cooking and preparing meals for our family. I’m going to go with it, so I just allowed them to plan the menu for this week. Not exactly what I would have planned (I need to run to the market to pick up a few of the items), but this may work in my favor if they are actually cooking all week.
Even though my children are 3, 7, and 8, there is a lot that they can do in the kitchen. Last night, when they made the chicken noodle soup, I chopped the raw chicken (because they are both grossed out by the texture of raw chicken), and they did the rest! They are learning to use the stove with supervision, measure liquids and solids accurately, and follow a recipe.
When my children were really little, everyone told me to encourage them to help with chores and housework before they would think of it as work. The same is now true of meal planning and preparations. They did not see coming up with a menu as work, which I often do. They also have no problem saying what they like and don’t like, and filling out the white board with what the alternatives are (my son doesn’t like soup that much, which is why he added grilled cheese to Wednesday’s dinner).
The more I think about it, the more impressed I am with what they chose, and that they didn’t just select sandwiches for the entire week. Most of the meals are rather well balanced! And my daughter even commented that we also have extra fruits and veggies to add to all of the meals because of the garden. I like the way she thinks!
