I’ve been struggling with meal planning and getting dinner on the table lately. I need convenience foods or carry-out at least once, sometimes twice, a week. Unfortunately, I had myself convinced that by not buying convenience foods when I grocery shop we are eating healthier. The reality is it would be healthier for me to buy convenience foods than to keep ordering carry out. Simple things like canned soup or prepared fish and chicken that are just a heat and eat option are way better for my family.
My epiphany came over the weekend when I realized that my husband and I had carry-out three times last week. Two nights were after the kids went to bed because we fed them but not us. And that’s how it usually goes. We feed the kids and make sure they eat a proper meal, and then we eat crap.
Meal planning is about so much more than just being organized and having a pretty idealistic plan in place. It is also about making sure you have the foods on hand that you need for every meal, and for every crazy night, so you don’t end up relying on carry-out.

A final word about carry-out
For the record, I’m not saying all carry-out is bad. There are many restaurants and shops that offer healthy, real-food meals that you can pick up and bring home to heat and eat with your family. Even the not so healthy places have healthier options. This is why we are not saying that we will never have take-out again, but instead, we need to scale it back for our health and for our budget.
This weekend, my oldest son is going camping with my husband on Saturday. When those trips happen, my daughter, my youngest son, and I usually order Chinese and have it delivered. That is the plan for this weekend too as it is our tradition. Everything in moderation!
