Last Week’s Frugal Accomplishments
I stocked up on canning jars and lids at Walmart. While a lot of places around here sell canning supplies, Walmart is consistently the least expensive in our area. I purchased 2 cases of pint jars, 2 cases of quart jars, 2 cases of wide mouth quart jars, and 4 boxes of regular lids.
Aldi stores in our area had bananas on sale for 29¢/lb last week. I bought about 20 lbs, and froze them 3 to a bag to use in banana bread.
Yesterday, I went back to Aldi for this week’s sale – pineapples at 99¢ each! A few week’s ago when they had this sale, I purchased 20 and got 27 pints of home canned pineapple. This time I purchased 24 (3 boxes – 8 to a box) and got 30 pints of home canned pineapple, plus 2 whole pineapples went into the dehydrator. They also had the bananas on clearance for 19¢/lb so I bought another 15 lbs. This time a bunch went into the dehydrator to make banana chips, and the remaining got peeled, and bagged for banana bread. Since 1 bag of the bananas were still green, they will be for fresh eating this week.
ShopRite’s CanCan sale is going for another week, so I stopped there on my way home. I purchase a 12pk of canned corn (the only store bought canned veg we eat), and 5lbs of Clementines for $3.99. I want to get another 5-10 lbs of clementines so I can can them as well, but the sale is limit 1 per purchase, so we’ll see if I make any additional trips to the store this week.
My husband & I went on a date this past Saturday. My mother came to the house to watch my children for the afternoon, and we used free passes to go to the Philly Home & Garden Show at Oaks. The show wasn’t what we expected, so we didn’t stay more than an hour. We then went out to lunch at RedRobin, and because we have a loyalty card, 1 of our meals was free.
I organized our pantry, disposed of the expired items, and made a clear inventory of what we actually have on hand vs what we need. Its amazing how much we actually have that I thought we were out of! Now I can plan this week’s grocery list around the items that are missing from the pantry.
We harvested the last of the broccoli out of the garden to have as a snack. The cold snap and snow that came over the last few days has put the brakes on the last of the plants, which is perfectly ok by me. This cold weather is very much needed for our fruit trees so they can go fully dormant, and I can prune them later in the week.
We watched several shows on Netflix & Hulu – and I am eternally grateful for not having subscription television.
I renewed my magazine subscription, getting it at $1 an issue instead of the cover price of almost $6 an issue!
