By now, you know one of my passions is gardening. I absolutely love the time I get to spend outdoors in our gardens, but even more I enjoy knowing where my food is coming from, and you can’t get much more local than growing it in your own yard! I want to inspire you to grow your own food too, so I have decided to host a gardening giveaway where 2 lucky winners will receive a variety of vegetable and herb seeds to start their own garden, or to add to their existing gardens.
I have selected the seeds for this prize pack from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed. This is the same seed that I purchase every year for my own gardens, and the seed that we use for the annual co-op. Happily Homegrown is not affiliated with Baker Creek Heirloom Seed, but we do adore what they are doing, so we talk about them often. If anyone from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed is reading this and would like to form a partnership – I’m in!
At our home, we practice a combination of Square Foot Gardening (SFG) and traditional row gardening. I love square foot gardening because it allows us to grow more variety in smaller spaces. For this prize package, we are going with a variety of seeds to grow a 4’x4′ raised bed using the SFG method. That means, you will get 16 different types of seed to grow in your garden! A great start for growing your own vegetables. You will receive enough of each seed to fill 1 square foot of garden space, plus a custom garden plan for that 4’x4′ bed showing the exact varieties of vegetables and herbs that you won.
Your prize package could include a combination of the following (plant varieties will vary for each prize package):
- plum, slicing, and/or grape tomatoes
- bell peppers
- head/leaf lettuce
- zucchini, summer squash, winter squash
- green/wax beans
- golden/red/candy cane beets
- onions, scallions, garlic, leeks
- parsley, basil, thyme, sage, dill, cilantro, tarragon, oregano
- orange/yellow/purple carrots
- red/green cabbage
Since everyone prefers to start their seeds in different ways – in egg shells, direct sowing, using peat pots, etc – I will leave that part up to you! For you to plant these items outdoors in late spring (our planting season here in zone 7a) you can start many of your seeds indoors now while there is still snow on the ground!
I hope you join me on this gardening adventure, and grow some of your own food this year. Good luck!
